Blast is one of the most important diseases in rice. Because of the extensive differentiation and the pathogenetic variability of the fungus, selection of breeding lines, which have broad spectra and durable resistance for blast, becomes .rather difficult. Pyramiding two or more resistance genes into one variety can provide a solution to this problem.
