Laizhou, located in Shandong Province, is the birthplace of Chinese woven handicrafts, where straw weaving has been done for more than 2,000 years. Laizhou’s woven handicrafts won a special award in 1915 al the Panama International Fair. Straw weaving is done mainly by the area’s rural inhabitants. In some villages almost every woman is adept at weaving.
