The Miao people who live in mountainous areas live in diao jiao lou, buildings constructed into the side of a hill and partially supported by pillars. Families store their goods and raise livestock on the first level of these dwellings. These young women lean on a "beauty rest," a place where they often sing in the antiphonal style.
