YIWU is the smallest point of southern Hangzhou, a scenic area of historic interest in China. Like many small cities south of the Yangtze River, Yiwu was virtually unknown for many years. Recently, however, Yiwu has gained almost sudden fame. A front-page story in People’s Daily newspaper declared: "Yiwu has become China’s largest wholesale market of small commodities."
