Abstract During his stay in Luntan in the western region,Tang Poet Cen Sen Wrote a great number of poems,In his poems,he mentionednames of many places. Among them there is the place走马川”,Many persons explained it to be“the Cheerchen River”,They arewrong. The authors believe that“走马川”refers to the road running from east to west through the Chaiwobao Basin in the southern suburbsof Urumqi. In the Tang dynasty.it was called“Baishuijian Road”which was.the only thoroughfare leading to the Tianshan Mountains inthe northern route of the Silk Road. All the Coming and going merchants took this road to Luntai(today, s Wulapo of Urumqi)for pay-ing taxes,Vehicles and horses went to and fro and transportation was very busy.Poets were impressed by this scene and called it“ a flat landwith horses going to and fro (走马川)”.In this case,“Baishuijian Road”was named only by poets.
