Abstract Qi Saiis an ancient folk sacrificial custom in our country.It is rarely seen today.According to fragment;of the documents dis-covered at Mogao Grottoes,one can suggest a comparatively complete picture of the Qi Sai custom in Dunhuang in ancient times. Startingfrom the New year Buddhist Ceremony for happiness,the author introduces different Qi Sai customs in Dunhuang in ancient times accordingto the order of years and months and the colour of the mixture of eastern and western culture reflected in them.The author also points outtheir roles in the mutual promotion of the prosperous development of Buddhist ceremonies at Mogao Grottoes.
