Abstract Since the 50s of the 20th century,ancient paper has often been discovered on the Silk Road,and so the history of paper making in China can be traced back several hundred vears. The article presents a brief introduction to the discoveries of ancient paper,quotes from classical records. and proves that paper had been made before Cailon.but the writer of the article does not negate the traditional statement that paper was first made by Cailong,but argues that he epitomised the paper making technology. It was due to his efforts that the primitive. nonsystematic paper making technology had been irnproved to batch preduce better paper,and to speed up the popularization of paper. The reason why the ancient paper of the West Han Dynasty has been constantly discovered along the Silk Road in the archaeological studies is the dry climatic conditions as well as the fact that the Silk Road vvas the road of the cultural exchange between the East and the West.
