Abstract The Lis is one of the largest clans in China, as it was shown by the l982 census. The Lis constitute 7.9 per cent of the population of the Han people. All the Lis throurhout the country in history have claimed that the root of their family trees can be traced back to the Lis in Longxi county. What is the reason? The article has examined the origin of the Lis in Longxi, the history of their prosperity, and how they developed into a noble house. The article concludes that since the imperial family of the Tang Dynasty claimed that they were the descendants of the Lis in Longxi, all the Lis throughout the country have alleged that their family tree can be traced back to the Lis in Longxi, and gradually the idea that 'all the Lis throughout the country come from Longxi' has been formed. The writer has made on-the-spot exploration, and concludes that the'Nine-Tomb Graveyard' opposite the 'Tombs of the Han Dynasty', a spot of historic interest. located at Ershilipu in the East River Valley of present Lintao county,Gansu, is the graveyard of Lichong and his family in the Qin Dynasty, andis the so-called'Dongchuan,Didao,Longxi' in the historical records, the ' Huaishu Village' located on the South River at Ershilipu, and called'Huaishuli' in the local dialect,is the 'Huaili' mentioned in the Historical Records concerning the birthplace of Liguang's ancestry.
