High temperature XRD and DTAITGA xvere employed to study the thermal decoinpositionof a commercial ammonium molybdate mixture which is used as the starting material for the pro-duction of molybdenum metal. Results show that the componenls in the mixture decompose sepa-rately at three temperatures according lo the following five steps :(NH4 )6Mo7O(24)· 4H2O→ (NH4)4Mo5O(17)→(NH4)2Mo4O(13);(NH4)2Mo4O(13) and β- ( NH4)2Mo4O(13)→(NH4)2Mo(14)O(43)→ (NH4)2Mo(22)O(67)→MoO3The weight percentage of each component was evaluated from weight losses in TGA curve.
