Nb-bearing slag from Baotou blast furnace hot metal was chlorinated in the solid state with molten CaCl2 under vacuum, 96-98% MnO or FeO being thus volatilized. By reducing the chloridized residue under the addition of flux, ferroniobium with about 60% Nb was made. A kinetic study of chlorination of synthetic MnO-Nb2O5-SiO2 and FeO-Nb2O5-SiO2 slag systems was conducted. A non-reacting core model for demanganification with free use of activity was formulated, and the rate-controlling step is explained.
