The relation between these two properties was investigated to elucidate this phenomenon. When calcined at high temperatures, green coke yields needle coke of high real density containing greater volume of micropores, Although the micropores in the coke affect the bulk density only to a small extent, they may cause the coke particles to break along the needle-like grains and thus enhance the shape anisotropy (ellipticity) of the coke particles. The ellipticity of the coke grains influences their packing, which in turn influences the bulk density of the green rods.
