The system of polygyny of imperial clan in the Qing Dynasty

清朝承袭了历代帝王多妻制的传统,八旗選秀制度就是为保障皇族子嗣的婚配和充足的女子来源而建立的。一夫多妻和旗内通婚的习俗,使其后裔大都交亲着近亲的血缘关系,子孙后代必然出现萎缩形势。

The traditional system of polygyny for rulers through the ages was followed by the Qing Dynasty. The system of beauty selec- tion in the Eight Banners of Manchu was set up for the purpose of providing the male offsprings of imperial clan with sufficient sources of women to ensure their marriage. The system of polygyny and the custom of intermarry between members of two families within the Eight Banners made it possible that most of the descendants were mixed up with close blood relationship and that the coming generations would be inevitablv com- ming to dysplasia.
