论“二名不偏讳”

A Discussion of the Avoidance of the Two Characters

偏讳是避讳的一种,对于它的理解历来难有定论。关于二名不偏讳的本义,常见的观点有两种,一种是二名不偏讳,即二字皆须避;一种是二名不徧讳,即仅避其中一字即可吹墓丶凇捌弊郑街炙捣ǘ寄茏?圆其说,都有据可证。考索二名、偏讳、史例诸方面,二名不偏讳的本义应该是指后者,即二名不徧讳。

The two Chinese characters ＂pian hui＂ literally means ＂bi hui＂ or in English ＂avoidance＂, the understanding of which actually is of much controversy. And there are two opinions about the original meaning of ＂the avoidance of the two characters＂. One holds that the two characters must be both avoided; the other holds that only one of the two characters must be avoided. The argument focuses on the disputing character ＂pian＂. This paper studies many examples in history and then comes to the conclusion that the original meaning of ＂pian hui＂ refers to the latter, that is ＂the avoidance of one of the two characters＂.
