Culture Encounter and Alien Imagination:the Image of Indian Monks in Tang Literature

与前代相比,唐人有幸生在中外文化大交融的时代,亲历印度佛教文化渗入汉唐文化的历史过程,并对异域观念进行当下性思考,产生一种审视异域的独特文化视野。反映在文本中,那便是唐人文学作品中存留许多关于印度佛教文化及来华天竺僧形象的描写,诸如唐诗、小说等都是考察唐代中外文化交流的珍贵史料。

Compared with the previous generation, the people in Tang Dynasty was luckily born in the age of Chinese and foreign cultural blending. They experienced the historical process in which Indian Buddhist culture infiltrating into the culture of Han. At the same time, they did the present thinking on exotic concepts, and cultivated out a unique vision at the exotic culture. Reflected in the text, that is, a number of descriptions on the charm of Indian Buddhist culture and the image of Indian monk in China were remained in Tang literary works, such as the Poetry of the Tang Dynasty and the story of the Tang Dynasty. Those are the precious historical material for the study of Sino-foreign cultural exchange.
