From the Han Dynasty Bamboo Slips to See the People of the Garrison System in Hexi(河西) Fortress Area

河西地区是西汉王朝防御羌胡的边防要地和经营西域的基地,军屯系统在河西的防卫和开发中发挥着至关重要的作用。本文认为从河西出土的汉简来看,汉代河西边塞军屯人口来源十分广泛,除戍卒、田卒、骑士外,还有大量征调来的应募士、良家子、谪卒,以及随军家属、私从者、葆子等。

Hexi area was an important base to defend against Qiang(羌) and Hu(胡) peoples, as well as to manage the Western Regions during the Han dynasty. The garrison system in Hexi has an important function in the defense and development of the area. The people of the garrison system was a very diverse body which included the defending-border soldiers, the soldiers’ family members, the attendants and the hostages according to the data from the Han dynasty bamboo slips discovered in Hexi area.
