According to Freud's theory of instincts, human psyche is driven by two major instincts: Eros (love instinct) and Thanatos (death instinct). The confrontation and conversion between the two instincts exist throughout the whole life of a living creature. Freud's theory of instincts finds its artistic expression in D. H. Lawrence's short story The Horse-Dealer' s Daughter. Through psychoanalysis of the two main characters, Mabel Pervin and Jack Fergusson, this paper explores the opposition between and coexistence of the two instinctual drives embodied in the short story.
