Research of the Origin of Tibetan Modern Higher Education

西藏现代高等教育起源的时间有1958年和1965年两种不同的说法,争议的焦点在于:西藏第一所现代高等学校——西藏民族学院,其前身"西藏公学"时期的教育能否算高等教育。根据对高等教育概念的理解和西藏公学时期学校性质的考察,可以认为"西藏公学"在刚刚初创时期并不是高等学校,但是1959年秋季开办的一期藏文翻译班具有高等教育的性质,可以看成是西藏现代高等教育的起点。从1964年3月成立藏文系、财会班和开展其他专业教育起,"西藏公学"就开始迈入高等学校的行列。1965年7月1日"西藏公学"更名为"西藏民族学院"是西藏有了第一所现代高等学校的象征性标志。

There are two opinions on the beginning time of Tibetan modern higher education, which is in 1958 and in 1965. The controversy lies in whether the education provided by Tibet Public School which was the predecessor of Tibet Nationalities Institute was qualified for higher education. According to the understanding of the concept of higher education and the study of the character of the Tibet Public School, it can be concluded that the Tibet Public School was not a higher education school when it was firstly founded. Nevertheless, the first Tibetan translation class enrolled in the fall of 1959 had the character of higher education, which can be regarded as the beginning of modern higher education of Tibet. After the starting of Ti- betan language department, financial and accountant training class and professional education in other fields in March of 1964, Tibet Public School walked into the threshold of higher education, and the changing name from Tibet Public School into Tibet Nationalities Institute can be regarded as a token of the appearance of the first modern institution of higher education.
