The Nanchang missionary case in 1906 led to three months of negotiation between China and France, and was the subject of widespread attention from Chinese and Western journalists. Newspapers in Shanghai followed the affair particularly closely. The Chinese and the Western press were divided into two camps in relation to the cause of the death of Jiang Chaotang, magistrate of Nanchang county, with each providing totally different explanations. According to the Chinese press, a French priest had entrapped and murdered the Chinese magistrate, while the Western press held that Jiang had committed suicide in order to frame the priest. This example of conflicting Chinese and Western press reports is typical of the period, and reflects the underlying historical background.
