All Optical Network and Its Development

The basic concepts, services, applications and three-layer structure of All Optical Network (AON) based on WDM technology are introduced, started with the advantages of AON. Then the key AON technologies and their latest development are analyzed. The two phases for optical fiber communications network to advance toward AON are introduced with the emphasis on AON trials conducted by the U. S. ARPA plan and European ACTS plan.
