Objective To investigate the feasibility and specification of partial hair shaving for the craniotomy. Methods The hair was partially shaved before surgery in 9 patients. According to the location of incision and the size of the skin flap, the hair in the operation field was shaved, about 1 cm wider than the skin flap. The remnant hair was shampooed just before the surgery. The shaved area and the surrounding hair were washed with complex iodine and alcohol separately during operation. The remnant hair was shielded from the surgical field with a drape and held with staples or silk sutures. Results All the 9 patients tolerated the procedure well and there was no intracranial or incision infection. After surgery the shaved area can be covered with the remnant hair quite well. Conclusion Partial hair shaving is feasible and safe for craniotomy. After surgery the patients looked just as the same before surgery and so they can return to society soon without embarrassment. Therefore it can be used widely in routine craniotomy.
