Dutchman is the masterpiece of Amiri Baraka, one of the most important contemporary Afro-American writers. In this play, Baraka adopted many traditional African myths and Eden myths so as to reveal the dittieulties of the black and their confusion in their pursuit of racial identity. Also, by lashing out at the black bourgeois for its weakness, Baraka aimed at telling his people that, because of the existing inharmonious factors, the time was not ripe for racial integration. Based on myth and archetypal criticism, the analysis of the play is expected to give the readers a full understanding of Baraka＇ s disillusionment and his final abandonment of the idea of racial reconciliation in early 1960s, which is of great importance in probing into the dominant theme of Baraka＇ s literary creation.
