扬州期间杜牧并未一味地沉迷在胭脂柳巷,其一生中最重要的有关藩镇问题的文章恰是在这个时期写就的,这一时期的一些诗作也反映出杜牧对国家命运的思考,并且扬州时期,杜牧开始研究兵法,这些都表明了杜牧感时忧国的本来面貌。忧国忧君、关注国家命运、为统治者出言献策是他扬州生活的主旋律。

Du didn＇ t actually abandon himself for the sensual pleasure when living in Yangzhou. The greatest works of his, which are on the regional separatists ＇regimes, were all accomplished during his stay in Yangzhou. Those works simply unmask him, and show his true characters： being concerned about the fate of his country and totally loyal to the emperor. During the so-called ＂libertine period＂ he has always been paying attention to the national conditions. Serving the national ruler by his talents is in fact the major part of his Yangzhou life.
