The spindle assembly checkpoint monitors attachment of microtubles to chromosomes, and the proper tension between sister chromatids during mitosis or homologous chromosomes during meiosis, to ensure equal distribution of chromosomes into daughter cells. Dysfunction in the spindle assembly checkpoint could lead to the generation of aneuploidy, which is closely related to diseases such as cancer, spontaneous abortions or birth with defects.
