Last year, world steel production fell victim of the global economic crisis, and production suffered a significant decline. In 2008, total crude steel production totalled 1,330mt, down 1.1% on the 2007 level, bringing 6 consecutive years of boom (2002-2007) to an end. Crude steel production in the major economies fell sharply including the EU-27 (down 5.5% year-on-year), the CIS (down 8.1% y-o-y), North America (down 5.6% y-o-y), the Middle East (down 2.5% y-o-y) and Asia (down 0. 7% y-o-y). Most of the world has re-cently been sliding into a recession and as a consequence has downgraded its steel requirements. As crude steel production has now shrunk so dramatically, the shipping industry has come under pressure as demand for raw materials (and finished prod-uct shipments) has declined . Curiously, however, China’s monthly iron ore import total in February was the highest on record.
