The big three Korean shipping lines are each deploying unique strategies to overcome the downturn. Hanjin Shipping took the decision in early February to close its 22 year-old 80% owned German subsidiary Senator Lines. Hanjin is a big believer in terminals becoming both cost savers and profit centres. Hyundai MerchantMarine has sailed very close to the wind in past downturns and so is taking nothing for granted despite posting the best results of any Korean shipping line last year, net profit jumping 297% to Won703.6bn. STX Pan Ocean, meanwhile, is prepared for a 50% plus slide in revenues but its diversified fleet should see it pull through the downturn. $6bn revenues are the 2009 target compared to last year’s record $9.29bn.
