This paper discusses the correct use and maintenance, how to improve the availability of the engines, how to extend the service life and how to avoid and minimize the occurrence of failures of large--size internal combustion engines used in open--pit mines. The paper also presents some precautions in practising point check--ups, startings, switching--offs as well as during the course of operation of the engines. All these are of practical value to the improvement of the skills of the engine operators and equipment management in open--pit mines.
