A green process route for converting cellulose into polyhydric alcohols with promising commercial applications is expected to emerge. CAS Dalian Institute of Chemical Physies (DICP) has for the first time attempted to apply the cheap tungsten carbide catalyst in the catalytic conversion of cellulose to achieve an ethylene glycol (EG) yield as high as 61%, which means that the production ofEG - an important chemical feedstock - can be extricated itself from the excessive dependence on oil resources and can adopt a route for using renewable biomass.
