With the help of feminist literary criticism, the thesis is aimed to delve into Kate Chopin's writing strategy exerted in The Awakening by means of analyzing the comparatively little--noticed character, Mademoiselle Reisz, as well as the historical and traditional triggers behind this female writung strategy. Compared with the rebellious main character Edna, Mademoiselle Reisz is more determined to campaign a tough contradiction against patriarchy. She does not only serve as an id of Edna, On a surface text, Edna gives herself up and makes herself a sacrifice to her awakening selfhood, while on the sub-- text level, by means of deliberately depicting Mademoiselle Reisz as homely, unpopular, or even disgusting, Chopin does make an effort to lift the barriers set up by patriarchal society and realize her hidden aim, that is, to have her longings for freedom and her anxiety over the search for womanhood directly conveyed to her female readers.
