In a narrative work, foreshadowing is the hint dropped by the narrator at the events to happen or characters to appear later in the text. The use of lots of cleverly designed foreshadowing is an important feature of the formal artistry of Hardy＇s A Pair of Blue Eyes. In using, the author mostly follows the pattern of hinting an event or character several times by foreshadowing. In a certain degree, foreshadowing together with the echoing of it in the later text helps to highlight the formal artistry of the novel, to enhance its readability, and, in one aspect, to contribute to its high position in Hardy＇s early canon.
