孟子曰:"王者之迹熄而《诗》亡,《诗》亡然后《春秋》作。"这一表述包含了两个前后相联的意思:其一重点在于"《诗》亡",即何以"《诗》亡"是"《春秋》作"的前奏;其二重点是"《春秋》作",即何以《春秋》继"《诗》亡"而起。这两个问题与早期史鉴思想及儒家教化思想密切相关,并对中国传统史学产生了深远影响。
