White Castle, one of Orhan Pamuk's representative works, presents the cultural clashes between East and West. Through a story about two men of the same appearance, the author attempts to reveal that such clashes do not stem from the difference in eastern and western identities, for identities are nothing but illusions, but from the black self in human unconsciousness. The solution, as Pamuk suggests, is to recognize the"double identity" of Turkey and integrate the two by means of Islamic Sufism.
