On the Date of Ge Hong's Death

关于葛洪卒年,众说纷纭,其中六十一岁说和八十一岁说影响较大。尽管原始材料语焉不详,但是通过逻辑分析,六十一岁说比较符合历史原貌。八十一岁说产生较晚,与之同时产生的是葛洪"尸解"的说法,这体现出东晋南朝以及唐初道教的兴盛。

From all the statements about the date of Ge Hong＇s Death, there are two important viewpoints, one is the sixty- year-old argument, the other is the eighty-one-year-old argument. Despite of the insufficience of the original material, we can make a conclusion that the former is right by analysis. At the same time, there is a legend that Ge Hong beearne a deity and rose into heaven, which was called deeomp. The reason of this legend is the prosperity of the Taoism in the Eastern Ch＇in Dynasty, the Southern Dynasty and the Tang Dyansty.
