The separation of men and women is a constant theme in Ernest Hemingway＇ s works. The separation is often manifested by some powerful external force and often in the extreme form way death. Through the so - called ＂fate＂, Hemingway seems to cover up his fear of living together with women. This paper aims at answering why Hemingway tends to write about the separations of the heroes and heroines rather than let them be Darby and Joan and have a long and happy life together. This is a result of Hemingway＇ s war experiences and his constant troubles with women. It reflects his fear and hatred towards women and shows his desire to lead a free life.
