Wandering between the Ego and the Others——On Coetzean’s Moral Solicitude in Waiting for the Barbarians

库切早期作品《等待野蛮人》表面上不指涉任何具体时间国度,像是后现代式的寓言,容易让人迷失在无边的语言游戏中,但它却实实在在地凸显了库切独特的道德关怀。通过分析《等待野蛮人》中主人公行政长官如何对待他者和自我的存在,可以感受库切的道德关怀,也许库切试图发出这样的呼唤:在不影响自己基本存在的前提下,宁可牺牲自己的舒适,也要尽力服务他者。

Waiting for the Barbarians is one of the early works written by J. M. Coetzee. Superficially, it refers to no specific time or place, which makes it more like a postmodern allegory, easily getting us trapped in the vast word games. Actually it embodies Coetzean＇s moral solicitude. How the protagonist, the magistrate, treated himself and the others of various sorts was analyzed in this paper. Based on the analysis, we could find Coetzean＇s moral solicitude disclosed, that is, we should serve the other, even at the cost of the self＇s comfort and pleasure, only if not life.
