Inspired by Mike Crang＇ s Cultural Geography, this article explores the spatial view in Herman Melville＇ s Billy Budd （ 1819-1891 ）. In the recent thirty years, the trend of re-reading Melville＇ s writings triggers the heated echo and contention in the academic circle. The analytical construction is built upon the absolute authority and the loss of human nature in the hierarchical vessel. The conflict between human nature and power has been internalized into the collective unconsciousness by analyzing the image of warship. So the author explores the functions of space in the text from the multi-dimensional perspectives to propel the deeper understanding of Melville.
