摘要
在麦克.克朗(Mike Crang)的《文化地理学》的启示下,文章探讨了《比利.巴德》中表现出的空间观。在军舰这个等级空间中,绝对权力与人性缺失间的关系则是文章分析的基础。分析军舰这一意象可以发现,权力和人性的冲突已经内化到特定空间中的集体无意识之中。军舰不仅是故事发生的载体,其本身也成为权力纠葛中的一个因素,并决定故事发展的进程。文章尝试从多角度深入分析空间在作品的体现,以期促进对梅尔维尔的认识。
Inspired by Mike Crang' s Cultural Geography, this article explores the spatial view in Herman Melville' s Billy Budd ( 1819-1891 ). In the recent thirty years, the trend of re-reading Melville' s writings triggers the heated echo and contention in the academic circle. The analytical construction is built upon the absolute authority and the loss of human nature in the hierarchical vessel. The conflict between human nature and power has been internalized into the collective unconsciousness by analyzing the image of warship. So the author explores the functions of space in the text from the multi-dimensional perspectives to propel the deeper understanding of Melville.
