五四时期是激进思潮集中爆发的时期,其主要表征是整体性的反传统和整体性的西方化。立足当代语境,我们应该充分肯定五四激进思潮的历史价值,也应该看到它多方面的缺失。五四激进思潮的缺失主要包括:二元对立的思维方式、民族文化的虚无意识、归咎于古人的无能心态、以己之短比人之长的"弱人政策"以及总体性西化的"认知不足"等。
