辜鸿铭《论语》翻译的自我东方化倾向及其对翻译目的的消解

Self-Orientalization and Its Counteraction against the Cultural Purpose in Gu Hongming’s Traslation Discourses and Sayings of Confucius

辜鸿铭的《论语》翻译,被译者赋予了塑造中国文化身份的使命。为了使译作具有完成其文化使命的能力,译者采用了完全贴近英语语言规范和西方文化价值体系的极端归化翻译策略。然而,正是由于这一翻译策略的采用,使译作带有强烈的自我东方化倾向,并由此消解了翻译的目的,失去了完成文化使命的可能性。

Gu Hongming endowed his Discourses and Sayings of Confucius, the translation of the Analects of Confucius, with a mission of improving the image of Chinese culture. In order to achieve the purpose, the translator summoned a strate- gy of extreme domestication, fully catering to English language grids and Western value system. However, it is just the ad- aptation of such a strategy that makes the translation strongly self-orientalized, which clears up the intended purpose of the translation, depriving it of the power of achieving its intended cultural mission.
