With the progress of the research on concept Tiyu, sport Tiyu has been a salient question. As the result, what is sport has been the hot topic and focus in recent years. Standing the positions of linguistics and historic study, according to the essential line of the history of English language and the history of England, and mainly basing on the English historical literatures, this paper investigates the etymon, original meaning and semantic development of the word sport, discusses the social- historical background of the semantic development of the word sport, and gives an answer to the question what is sport and thus lays a foundation for answering the question what is Tiyu.
