Arthur Mervyn employs gothic devices to depict Philadelphia in 1793, the city in crisis. The urban space represented in the novel is troubled by alienation, crimes and plague. The yellow fever becomes the symbol of evil forces and moral corruption, tuming the city into an alienating maze in which death frequents. Arthur Mervyn initiates the tradition of urban gothic fiction. Its gothic features convey Charles Brockden Brown's criticism against the inherent problems of city life.
