In the framework of colonialism, the identity construction of a nation lies not only in the cultural imposition and oppression from the empire, but also in the acceptation and rebellion of the natives toward the colonialism. Therefore, mimicry and subversion are the major theme of the political struggles in the colonial countries. The Picture of Dorian Gray written by Oscar Wilde reveals the root of the extinction of the Anglo--Irish Ascendancy by giving an account of the life story of Dorian Gray. As a member of the Ascendancy, Wilde realized that the class was doomed with the colonialism.
