Profoundly influenced by Thomas Hobbes' moral philosophy, Daniel Defoe employs Hobbes' s concept of self - interest into the characterization and demonstration of themes. This concept therefore ob- tains unique semiological significance in a specific historical context. Exploiting its semiological signifi- cance in self - preservation, identity refashioning and morality reconstruction of Moll in Moll Flanders will greatly facilitate our endeavors in probing the living and moral conditions of working - class at that time and the complexity of human nature.
