Kate Chopin's The Awakening, published in 1899, depicts American women's efforts to reconstruct their identity in the late nineteenth century and the early twentieth century. The paper explores the binary opposition between the social constraints on women and Edna's aspiration for independence. However, without a solid way to reconstruct her own identity, Edna is doomed to fail in the process of self - discovery. The novel's sociological value lies in its shedding light on the unbearable weight of freedom.
