The Choice of Jiang Tingfu: from Diplomatic Historian to Diplomat

面对民族危机日益深重的国家形势,在国民政府的邀请与鼓励之下,外交史研究领域巨擘蒋廷黻出任驻苏大使。然而,实任驻苏大使的经历对于蒋廷黻而言则是一段不愉快的外交体验。究其原因,既有自身外交经验的欠缺,亦有国内国际局势的掣肘。蒋廷黻从事外交是当时国民政府学人从政的一个缩影,一定意义上反映了同时代知识分子的政治生涯。

Faced with the growing deteriorated situation of national crisis, Jiang Tingfu who specialized in diplomatic history went to Soviet Union as a diplomat, with the Nationalist government＇s invitation and encouragement. However, the substantive experience as the Soviet Union＇s ambassador was not a pleasure. It＇s not only because of the defection of diplomatic experience himself, but also because of the constraint of domestic and international situation. Jiang Tingfu who worked at the diplomatic position was a miniature of the Nationalist government＇s scholars, and more or less it reflected the political careers of the contemporary intellectuals.
