大学理念对于大学来说至关重要,西方大学理念的价值基础是学术自由与大学自治。但是如何让内外部社会认同与接受这一理念,这就是一个理念合法化的过程。从最初的为了生存需要的自我承诺,到正确回应社会的诉求,再到今天的直面大学组织的历史责任,其理念合法化的历程一直是对前面理念的扩展与深化,而非完全抛弃,是一个渐进式的革新过程,而非激进的革命方式。

Academic freedom and autonomy lie at the root of the idea of a university in the Western world.Such an important idea certainly need to be legitimated and accepted by both insiders and outsiders of the campus.At their birth,universities in the Western world were deemed nothing but scholars'means for livelihood.Nevertheless,they've taken up increasingly greater social responsibility later,and currently turn into institutions with crucial historical mission.This modern idea of a university does not derive from an abrupt breakaway from universities's humble origins;on the contrary,it is in a gradually evolutionary way that such a profound and broadening conception of a university's legitimacy has finally come into existence.
