William Faulkner's constant impetus in his earlier work came from a psychological trauma his brothers brought to him.At first he turned to writing to release his resentment of his brothers and gain some psychological compensation,but then he discovered that fraternal rivalry could not only serve as a major theme of his novels,but be represented as a metaphor for race relations in the American South.
