The Sound and the Fury describes the historical context of the society in the American South and the southerners' mentality in the postwar reconstruction period by vividly portraying the tremendous mental impact of the American Civil War upon the Southern people. The novel employs the narrative structure of the Gospels, namely a multi-narrative perspective based on the tragic theme of resurrection and redemption of human nature,so as to reveal the tradition, evil, fall and dim hope of the South. Its tragic significance is achieved through its pervasive use of Biblical characters and images. This paper will show how The Sound and the Fury is related with The Bible,a fact that places this novel directly within the Biblical literary tradition.
