As the first emperor to be converted to Christianity in history, Constantine's religious policy had brought a historic turning point for the development of Christianity. His conversion had promoted the evangelization of the Roman Empire. Constantine issued the Edict of Milan to legalize Christianity, held the Conference of Nicene to unify church thoughts, enabled the clergy to become the privileged class and interfered in the internal affaires of Church actively. These measures opened a new era for the development of Christianity and had far-reaching effects on the pattern of the relationship between Church and State.
