The article makes an analysis of the origin and development of Yeats＇s Doctrine of the Mask and its embodiment in his poems. It points out that Yeats, aiming at establishing his self-confidence and restoring the Irish people＇s self-esteem and self-confidence, uses the Mask to differentiate self and anti-self. The Mask serves as a device not only for personal disguise and protection but also for self-overcoming and self-surpassing, which displays Yeats＇ s positive life style and reflects the Yeastian nationalism, whereas partially deconstructs his always highlighted superiority of sensibility to reason.
