Compounding is a main type of word -formation. According to orthographic criterion, compounds are written in three different forms： solid form, hyphenated form and open form. Hyphenated compounds feature figurativeness, diversity and brevity. This paper discusses the generic color, features and functions of hyphenated compounds.
