The Appreciation of Rhetorical Features of English Idioms

语言是文化的载体,习语是语言中的精华。习语是在语言的长期使用过程中形成的固定的词组、短语或句子,其在固定搭配、语法结构或语义含义上都是特殊的,一般不能随意改变。作为一种特殊的语言现象,习语具有文体、修辞、结构、语义和约定俗成等特征。文章概述了英语习语的主要修辞特征及汉语对称翻译的表达,以展现英语习语的语言练达及结构之美。

Language is the vehicle of culture and idioms are the prime of language. Since they have formed through a long period of time of utilization, idioms are fixed words, phrases, or sentences which are unique in collocation, grammatical structure or meaning and usually cannot be arbitrarily altered. Idioms, as a particular linguistic unit, enjoy their own special characteristics such as the stylistic features, the rhetorical features, structural features, the semantic and conventionalized features. This paper elaborates briefly the main rhetorical features of English idioms and Chinese equivalence to familiarize the readers with the concise expression and a sound appreciation of the beauty of English idioms.
